Manglik Dosha (also called Mangal Dosha or Kuja Dosha) is one of the most asked-about topics in Vedic astrology, especially around marriage. It occurs when Mars (Mangal) is placed in certain houses of the birth chart, and it is traditionally believed to affect the timing and harmony of marriage. But the fear surrounding it is often far larger than the reality — and crucially, Manglik Dosha can be cancelled by several common chart conditions.
Which placements make a person Manglik
Mars in any of these houses creates Manglik Dosha:
| House | Traditionally affects |
|---|---|
| 1st (Lagna) | Temperament, aggression in the relationship |
| 2nd | Family harmony, speech |
| 4th | Domestic peace, mother |
| 7th | The marriage and spouse directly |
| 8th | Longevity of marriage, in-laws |
| 12th | Bed pleasures, expenses |
Classical practice checks these houses from three reference points — the ascendant (Lagna), the Moon, and Venus — which is why a casual self-assessment from one chart often gets it wrong.
When Manglik Dosha is cancelled
This is the part most people never hear. Manglik Dosha is frequently cancelled or greatly reduced (Mangal Dosha Bhanga) by conditions such as:
- Mars in its own sign or exaltation (Aries, Scorpio, or Capricorn).
- Mars aspected by or conjunct Jupiter or the Moon (benefic influence).
- Manglik placements in both partners' charts — two Mangliks are traditionally said to neutralise the dosha.
- Certain sign placements and the involvement of benefics in the relevant houses.
- The dosha naturally weakening with age (often considered much milder after ~28 years).
Because cancellation is so common, a large share of people labelled "Manglik" by a quick check actually have a chart where the dosha is mild or neutralised. Concluding "no marriage" or "delayed marriage" without checking cancellation is simply incorrect astrology.
A balanced view
Manglik Dosha is real in classical Jyotish, but it is one factor among many, not a verdict. Mars also brings courage, drive and protectiveness to a marriage. The right question is never "Am I Manglik, yes or no?" but "How strong is the dosha in my chart, is it cancelled, and what does the 7th house and its lord — plus the Navamsa (D9) — actually show about my marriage?"
Traditional remedies
- Worship of Mars / Hanuman: reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, traditionally on Tuesdays, is the classic support for Mars.
- Charity (daan): offering red lentils (masoor dal), red cloth, or jaggery to those in need.
- Kumbh Vivah and other traditional rites are practised in some communities for strong dosha — best undertaken with knowledgeable guidance, never out of fear.
- Matching: the most practical step is proper Kundli Milan, which checks both charts for the dosha and its cancellation together.
