The Dasha system is the timing engine of Vedic astrology — what makes it possible to say not just what a chart promises, but when those results unfold. The most widely used is the Vimshottari Dasha, a 120-year cycle in which each of the nine planets rules a continuous period (Mahadasha) of your life, in a fixed sequence and length, starting from the Nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth. Within each Mahadasha are sub-periods (Antardasha), and within those, finer sub-sub-periods — giving timing down to the month.
The nine Mahadasha periods
| Planet | Mahadasha length |
|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 years |
| Venus | 20 years |
| Sun | 6 years |
| Moon | 10 years |
| Mars | 7 years |
| Rahu | 18 years |
| Jupiter | 16 years |
| Saturn | 19 years |
| Mercury | 17 years |
The sequence is fixed; only your starting point differs, determined by your birth Nakshatra. The total is 120 years — the traditional full human lifespan.
How the Dasha colours life
The planet ruling the current Mahadasha sets the dominant theme of that phase — a Jupiter period feels different from a Saturn period. But the result depends on how that planet sits in your chart: a strong, well-placed planet gives a favourable period; a weak or afflicted one gives a more testing period. The Antardasha (sub-period) within it refines this further, which is why fortunes shift within a single Mahadasha.
Why the Dasha is essential for timing
A chart shows the promise; the Dasha shows the delivery date. Marriage, career change, wealth, foreign travel — each tends to occur when the relevant house's significator is activated by the running Dasha or Antardasha. This is why two people with similar promises experience events at different times: their Dasha sequences differ.
