In Vedic astrology, gemstones (ratna) are worn to strengthen a specific planet's positive influence in your chart. Each of the nine planets (Navagraha) is associated with one primary gemstone, and the correct stone for you depends entirely on your birth chart — which planets are weak, which are benefic for your ascendant, and which periods (dasha) you are running. There is no single "lucky stone" that suits everyone.
The nine planets and their gemstones
| Planet | Gemstone | Strengthens |
|---|---|---|
| Sun (Surya) | Ruby (Manik) | Vitality, authority, confidence, father |
| Moon (Chandra) | Pearl (Moti) | Mind, emotions, peace, mother |
| Mars (Mangal) | Red Coral (Moonga) | Courage, energy, drive, siblings |
| Mercury (Budh) | Emerald (Panna) | Intellect, speech, business, communication |
| Jupiter (Guru) | Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) | Wisdom, fortune, marriage, children |
| Venus (Shukra) | Diamond (Heera) | Love, luxury, art, relationships |
| Saturn (Shani) | Blue Sapphire (Neelam) | Discipline, career, longevity |
| Rahu | Hessonite (Gomed) | Clarity, protection from confusion |
| Ketu | Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) | Intuition, spiritual insight |
How the right gemstone is chosen
A qualified reading looks at three things: (1) the lord of your ascendant (Lagna), whose stone is generally safe and supportive to wear; (2) the lords of benefic houses for your specific ascendant; and (3) the planet whose dasha you are running. Stones for functional malefics, or for a debilitated or badly-placed planet, can do more harm than good. This is why the same stone that helps one person can unsettle another.
Two stones to never wear casually
Blue Sapphire (Neelam) for Saturn and Diamond (Heera) for Venus are the most powerful and fast-acting stones, and also the most reactive. Blue Sapphire in particular is famous for showing its effect quickly — for better or worse. Never wear either on hearsay, a shopkeeper's suggestion, or because it "looks lucky." They must be confirmed against your chart, and many traditions recommend a trial period first.
How gemstones are traditionally worn
- Quality matters: the stone should be natural, untreated, and of sufficient weight (carat) — a flawed stone can be ineffective.
- Metal and finger: each planet has a traditional metal (gold, silver, etc.) and finger; for example, Yellow Sapphire in gold on the index finger for Jupiter.
- Day and time: stones are traditionally first worn on the planet's weekday, during an auspicious muhurat, after cleansing.
- Consultation first: the single most important rule — confirm the stone suits your whole chart before wearing it.
